Pakistani commandos stormed the house where the Chinese hostages, and three Pakistanis, were being held along the Afghan border. The five kidnappers were killed, but not before they killed one of the Chinese engineers. The other four captives were rescued unharmed.

In India, Maoist (communist) rebel groups said they would return to fighting if the current peace talks did not result in new laws implementing their agenda (land reform and the way foreign aid was distributed.)
